Senior Mechanical Design Engineer / Group Leader, Mechanical Engineering
Led a group of up to 6 technical experts in developing train control equipment for various transportation automation projects around the world. Managed product development cycle. Prioritized and assigned tasks. Created work packages with breakdown of tasks and provided estimates and completion dates. Ensured requirements were documented and verified. Led design activities to ensure products were properly designed, documented, tested and produced. Provided technical guidance and design guidelines; Represented team in presentation of designs to customers; Chaired design reviews. Interfaced with other departments and groups to resolve budget, schedule and resource related issues. Identified opportunities to improve processes. Created SOW and managed subcontracting work.
Other engineering activities included:
- Performed analysis by using engineering computation and advanced analysis tool, e.g. ANSYS and Flotherm.
- Performed research and feasibility studies, created white papers and 3D models for proposed design.
- Worked with production department to resolve manufacturing issues.
- Liaised with part manufacturer for quality issues and determined cost effective manufacturing alternative.
- Collaborated with customers to determine installation details and to resolve failure issues.
Confidential, 1996 - 2003
Product Design Engineer
As technical leader and product designer, got involved in all phases of the development cycle, from bid and proposal to product release. Activities ranged from technical requirement generation, white paper development, creation of work breakdown structure for product development and product schedule estimates to conceptual design, trade studies, functional partitioning, preliminary thermal analysis, preliminary stress analysis,3D model building, detail design with tolerance studies, FMEA, DFMA, test development, design release and production support for product. Other activities included: failure investigation, jig and fixture design, conduct design review and value engineering exercise. Major projects included:
- Lockheed Martin C5 bleed air flow sensor: as technical lead, developed a fast response, highly reliable, wide operating range mass flow sensor for bleed air measuring application using 6 Sigma design approach. The sensor was ruggedized and designed to work in tough environments. The design concept of the sensor was original and considered patentable.
- FAIRCHILD DORNIER 728JET ECS: worked closely with a team of system engineers to come up with all sensors required for environmental control system. Collaborated with Fairchild Dornier design engineer to develop installation scheme for the sensors.
- Boeing 737-x Auxiliary Power Generator/Starter: designed a low cost, high reliability Start Power Unit. The design utilized investment casting to replace all machined piece to dramatically reduce the cost of the chassis.
- NATO IRIS-T air-to-air missile actuation system: designed a fin locking and actuation mechanism as well as fin bearing seal in thrust vectoring control section. The design was highly reliable and capable to function in extreme harsh environment.
- Boeing Rescue 406 Antenna Simulator: utilized designs for manufacturing and assembly techniques to redesign a proof-of-concept simulator to a producible product.
