Application Architect

Responsibilities:

  • Designed, developed, and implemented an Enterprise Encryption Services application (EES). This application is used to encrypt and or decrypt all credit card numbers passing through Macys department stores, from the registers to the back office. The initial prototype was developed using C#, .NET 2.0, COBOL, CICS, and MS SQL Server 2005. Given the number of credit cards retained by Macys (over 496 million) and based on the processing requirements, the data was moved from MS SQL Server 2005 to the mainframe DB2 database. In addition, several of the client services originally written in C# and the .NET 2.0
  • Framework were redesigned and rewritten in COBOL/CICS. The system processes several million transactions per day in less than 2 seconds. I was responsible for writing the following technical documents for the system: architecture specification, program specifications, and application program interface module specifications. I worked with the data architects and DBAs to develop the logical and physical data models. I provided technical leadership to all applications teams using the service. I worked closely with several third party software providers to gain a better understanding of their product. This included when working with their Integrated Cryptographic Service Facility (ICSF) product used for data encryption and encryption key maintenance and PKWare Inc; when working with SecureZip, PartnerLink, and SecureZip Partner for file encryption. Provided work direction to several application developers. I encrypted and loaded over 496 million credit card numbers into the database. I provide ongoing support for the application which includes monitoring its performance, making sure that it meets all service level agreements currently in place, adding new services as needed, adding and or changing encryption and transport keys, and new users as needed. I am currently working with the enterprise architects in integrating the EES services into the new SOA/ESB infrastructure currently being designed.

  • Designed and coded a new order processing application using C#, Windows Forms, and the .NET 2.0 Framework.   • I provided software maintenance and enhancements to an electric utility billing application. The application was an ASP.NET application written in C# (70%) and VB.NET (30%). The data was captured and stored in an MS SQL Server 2005 database. The database contained over 300 tables and 1400 stored procedures. The application made heavy use of ADO.NET, CSS, Crystal Reports, Active Reports, XML, and stored procedures. All application development was done using Visual Studio 2005. Created a web service application that allowed customers to prepay for their electricity, deposit the payments to the client’s bank, and enroll into our client’s application.

Responsibilities:

  • I was a senior architect in the design, development, and implementation of a new real time flight tracking system. The original application was written in C++ and ran on HP UNIX, the new application was written in C# using the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and ran on windows server 2003 servers. The application received real - time flight events from several external sources, parsed and stored the data in an MS SQL Server database, and created XML formatted messages that were published to several clients via TIBCO Rendezvous and Confidential MQSeries. This application processes over 1 million messages per day.
  • I managed a staff of 12 application developers, 1 business analyst, 1 project leader, and 1 application architect. As manager of the Flight progress event system and the Flight Positioning System, I was responsible for ensuring that these mission critical applications were up 24/7/365. These systems provided flight data related to the operation of all Delta flights including Delta connection carriers to all airports served by Delta and its partners. This included arrival and departure data, airport gate assignments, delays, cancellations, and a host of other operational related data. In addition, over 50 internal applications and several external trading partners consumed this data. I had full responsibility for the annual budget with respect to hardware and software acquisition, staffing, consulting services, and (2.5MM in 2004). Planed and directed the day-to-day activities of the staff. I made recommendations on the future direction of the architecture

  • The resulting infrastructure consisted of the following components: Sun Servers, Sterling commerce’s Connect: Enterprise for UNIX, Sterling commerce’s Connect: Mailbox for Z/OS, Sterling commerce’s Connect Direct (multiple platforms), TIBCO Business Connect, GE Global Services Application Integrator EDI translator, and Confidential ’s NetView FTP. I managed a staff of 8 developers, 2 UNIX System Administrators, 1 UNIX System Engineer, 1 Trading Partner Administrator, and 1 Project Manager. I managed the project budget. I was responsible for the backup and recovery of data, the security of Confidential data, access control, preventing unauthorized access to the data, and the timely delivery of the data.
