PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
Confidential
Co-founder, President
Responsibilities:
- Developed a cost-effective machine vision library with rich image processing and powerful pattern matching algorithms including feature-based pattern matching and geometric shape finding, as well as metrology, OCR, …with CPU-level vector optimizations, sold to customers in various areas, and helped customers cutting cost by up to 75%
- Provided pattern matching function to high-end surface profiler tool
- Provided pattern matching function to advanced printed material cutting tool, the fist one using machine vision in the industry
- Provided a software metrology tool for nano rod characterization under SEM
- Provided a software metrology tool for nano line measurement under SEM
Confidential, Santa Clara, CA
Sr. Software Engineering Director
Responsibilities:
- Designed advanced system software architecture, introduced and customized advanced software process (CMM level 3) with my optimization for fast-paced start-up companies with limited resources. Implemented advanced project management methodology (PLC), worked essentially on all the 7 phases in it, and resolved numerous R&D, HW-SW, SW-application interfacing issues creatively involving cross-functional teams. Also helped key algorithm development and software optimization/acceleration using parallel processing and other new technologies
- Led the software team and completed a beta version of the million-dollar thin-film and & OCD tool (by now 1 shipped to SMIC and 1 shipped to Grace Semiconductor, 3 shipped to Samsung in 2015 and 2 more to go)

Senior Staff Software Engineer and Algorithm Lead (for a period of time)
Responsibilities:
- Designed and implemented majority of the software algorithms for the e-beam wafer inspection system including e-gun, column, stage, EFEM calibration and diagnostics, algorithms (aperture centering, Wien filter, beam size, beam distortion, charging control, gain and offset, focus and astigmatism, auto focus, stage distortion etc.) and achieved one-button calibration for the sophisticated tool, which greatly enhanced the tool value. Many algorithms were reused by other divisions/tools inside the company.
- Designed, implemented and/or integrated majority of the application algorithms e.g. die size, cell size, wafer alignment, image optimization, defect inspection for array and random inspection such as AT, SAT, MDAT etc. and many post processing algorithms (redetection, inline binning, auto defect classification) as well
- In a critical case, designed a key resolution enhancement algorithm which saved two purchase orders of the eS32 tool at about $15 million totally
- Implemented advanced defect detection algorithms on new computing platform, and optimized core algorithms using AltiVec (for PowerPC, later on changed to SSE for Intel CPU) together with other optimization techniques, which greatly reduced the system cost and improved tool performance. Developed the fastest image registration algorithm for array defect detection which reduced number of blades i.e. the cost. Also as a benchmark, my general purpose NCC algorithm using AltiVec and other techniques was 20 times faster than the original one

Senior Vision Engineer
Responsibilities:
- Developed a PC-based machine vision library (running on Pentium II) and successfully replaced Cognex’s vision board, reduced the cost by 75% and increased algorithm flexibility, and successfully used on EG4090TM which was the top revenue generating product of the company for many years
Confidential, Milpitas, CA
Senior System Engineer
Responsibilities:
- Led the integration of ExSPECT, an expert system for advanced cardiac SPECT by Confidential University. Successfully extended the resolution recovery algorithm from Tc-99m to Tl-201 for cardiac SPECT successfully supported a clinical trial. With new winning features as resolution recovery, attenuation correction, and down-scatter correction, the new product VantageTM had a great success, together with another winning product MCD, changed the company’s market share from under 25% to over 50%.
Confidential, Atlanta, GA
Graduate Student in Physics Department, Research Assistant in Radiology Department
Responsibilities:
- Invented the fasted resolution recovery algorithm MDDWF, faster than all existing ones by two orders (0.5 sec on SPARC 20) at the time, as the first resolution recovery algorithm for cardiac SPECT used clinically, later on become an important part of ExSPECT, an expert system for cardiac SPECT, licensed by Confidential University to ADAC Labs and Philips, which has been used on millions of studies and has brought over million dollar royalty to the university, obtained 3% royalty share as a graduate student
- Co-invented a down-scatter correction method for cardiac SPECT with simultaneous Tc-99m emission and Gd-100 transmission (CT) for the ADAC’s Vantage system, the first SPECT system with attenuation correction in the world
- Investigated/implemented a large number of SPECT/PET/CT reconstruction, preprocessing, and post processing algorithms e.g. attenuation correction, scatter compensation, resolution recovery in 1-D and 3-D IFBP, ML-EM, OS-EM etc.
