PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Confidential, Kansas City, MO

Lead DB2 DBA

Responsibilities:

  • Helped transfer a major application from ACI to JP Morgan. The application had several thousand large tablespaces, tables and indexes. Completion of the project required using REXX, SAS and DB2 DBA skills.
  • Primary objective was to reduce the time it was taking create the DDL, load and unload jobs as well as reduce the time it was taking to actually unload and load the DB2 data. Accomplished this with solid knowledge of DB2 and the BMC DB2 Tool Suite.
  • Modified & created REXX and SAS programs. By introducing BMC compression and the use of BMC unloads, was able to make major improvements to the process they had developed. One of the biggest problems was creating the DDL for all of the databases and underlying objects. They were trying to accomplish this with home grown REXX and SAS programs. Was able to accomplish it with the use BMC tools in 1/10th the time and 100% accuracy.
  • Used BMC to create partition unloads and loads so multiple jobs could run at the same time to unload the large tablespaces. The improved process took only 3hours to run to completion (instead of almost 9hours).
  • Monitored and tuned the process with Computer Associate’s Insight for DB2.

Lead DB2 DBA

Responsibilities:

  • Performed system and application recovery as well as database performance.
  • Supported several applications ~ worked with application analyst on design, testing and tuning. Provided primary support for a life insurance application (ATLAS). Created DDL for new Databases, tablespaces and indexes in the unit test, system test and production system. Monitored the applications with BMC, IBM, CA and Strobe tools for DB2 as needed to accomplish acceptable performance.
  • Identified inefficient SQL code and made recommendations for improvement. Modified or created indexes, or rewrote the SQL statement. Made recommendations to change COBOL code to make the process more efficient.
  • As a DBA, created RACF (DB2 security) groups and granted the needed DB2 access authorities for individuals, application groups and production jobs.
  • Implemented Resource Limit Facility (RLF) to control Dynamic SQL on all mainframe platforms resulting in over a million dollar savings in CPU from dynamic SQL. If the dynamic SQL statement exceeded its threshold it was not allowed to run.
  • Created reports using SMF records which allowed me to work with analyst responsible for long running queries, either eliminating or tuning them to acceptable standards.
  • Was also involved on the interview staff of DBAs. Performed technical interviews of DBA candidates to determine if they had the level of expertise they claimed to have. Would present hypothetical situations and ask them to explain how they would fix the problem.

  • Responsible for Performance, Recovery and Application Development of a large PeopleSoft project. Worked with developers migrating data and structures, creating and managing new DB2 objects.

Used Omegamon for DB2 to monitor and tune the PeopleSoft applications. Used REXX to write an application that would recover data to previous established recovery points making it easy to rerun application tests.
  • Granted appropriate DB2 access such as Read, Write, Bind, etc. as requested. Confidential used Computer Associates ACF2 for security (not IBM’s RACF).
