Systems Engineer
(Media Systems and Network Engineering)
Responsibilities
Systems Engineers working within the Media Systems and Network Engineering group must approach their responsibilities with a “dial-tone” mindset, i.e., the systems, networks, databases, storage systems and applications must achieve and maintain the highest levels of availability and performance to ensure that the time and business-critical demands of feature film production are supported with world-class technology and systems management.
Specific responsibilities include:

* Design and enhance scalable systems (Linux/Unix); measurement, optimization, and tuning of system performance and ensuring that systems will run reliably and are highly available in a 24/7 production environment.
* Investigates, analyzes, documents, and resolves hardware and software problems on datacenter computer systems; performs technical assistance, and support on a wide range of servers and datacenter hardware.
* Create and maintain operational documentation pertaining to deployment, management and administrative processes, including data recovery requirements for operating systems, application configuration, and data, then executes and monitors back-up schedules.
* Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned, including work off-hours on occasion to maximize production uptime.
Knowledge, Experience & Expertise
Deep knowledge of:
* Systems hardware (e.g. blade servers, load balancers, SAN, NAS, and tape libraries).
* Linux Engineering Experience (Redhat, CentOS, or Ubuntu)
* High performance data storage solutions whether SAN, NAS, or Clustered (e.g. Isilon)
* Large-scale backup solutions and tape technologies (e.g. Quantum, NetBackup)
* Data center, network, and application architectures
* Server architectures (e.g. multi-core, distributed)
* Local and Networked File Systems (e.g. NFS, CIFS, AFP, DFS, NTFS, Hadoop)
* File Transport Solutions (e.g. Signiant, Aspera, SFTP)
* Application and Web Services
* Systems Toolsets and protocols (e.g. SNMP, Nagios, tcpdump)
* Configuration Management (e.g. Puppet)
* Virtual Environment technologies (e.g. VMWare, OpenStack, CloudStack)
* Digital Production environments
* Systems Security (e.g. password domains, patch, monitoring)
* Must have scripting expertise. Experience with PHP, Perl , Python and Ruby (optional), JSON+REST/XML+SOAP, mySQL, Cloudstack, Openstack, configuration management (Puppet, Chef)
* Automation technologies in Systems
Additional film-specific knowledge:
* Encode, Decode, Transcode
* Fingerprinting
* Watermarking
* Rendering
* Compositing
* Digital Intermediate
Desired practical experience:
* Operating system installation and management
* Strong project management and resource planning experience
* IP networking including performance based troubleshooting
* Installation of large server systems
* Recover large file system in production environment
* Routed network installation and management
* File transport experience
