Work History:

  • Designed, coded and maintained batch and GUI systems for Marketing. Systems were built on Oracle and Unix. Coding was done using PL/SQL, shell script, Informatica and Java EE.
  • Created and maintained applications that improved customer relations and reduced call center volume. These included Outage Notifications, Sunday Sky Video Bills, and Customer Preferences synchronization.
  • Coded and deployed ad hoc servlets and JSPs for quick GUI solutions to support Marketing initiatives.
  • Maintained legacy J2EE applications built with Struts and Java Server Faces.
  • Coded, deployed and maintained SOAP web services and web service clients.
  • Added a page to the Sales Commission system, which is an MVC Model 2 Struts Java web application served from Weblogic and Oracle 10g. The struts-config.xml JSP Action subclass form, business logic and results beans were all coded and packaged using the Eclipse Java IDE.
  • Optimized Oracle code using table compression, partitioning, explain plan analyses, optimizer hints, and local table snapshots in lieu of distributed queries.
  • Optimized Unix shell scripts by executing subshells in parallel.
  • Developed a daily dashboard report for Optimum Rewards. Data was extracted from many sources, aggregated and rendered into HTML and Excel formats and emailed to Marketing management.
  • Formally prepared and presented code deployments pursuant to Cablevision's Production Review Board process.
  • Migrated production application and database servers. Researched the impact to the code base and applied the necessary code changes. Worked with DBAs and sysadmins to verify database and server integrity.
  • Salvaged an overtaxed SAS application that imported >1 million records from Experian Cheetahmail per day. SAS code was reverse engineered and coded anew in Oracle and Informatica. Process time was reduced and job stability was restored.
  • Researched and coded a general-purpose tool using Oracle DBMS DATAPUMP and UTL FILE. The tool provides a table-driven mechanism to schedule and execute the transfer of tables between Oracle databases without the need for db links, where, if they were used, would violate the prevailing Oracle license.

  • Programmed a server-side ETL process to support Brinker's Menu Information Management system. MIM is used to manage restaurant menus for Brinker's 1600 operating units. Coding was done as packaged PL/SQL routines in an Oracle 10g database. The project entailed full life cycle development from concept to production. Performance enhancements that were implemented include: bulk collection into PL/SQL objects and parallel processing using the DBMS ALERT and DBMS SCHEDULER Oracle packages. File I/O from the database is achieved through PL/SQL external procedure callouts to a C library.
  • Coded an intranet reports application to support MIM users. Programming was done with PL/SQL, PHP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript. A PL/SQL package executes all SQL and is exposed to PHP code, which enables the same codebase to be used in different database schemas. Client-side code is standardized for IE and Mozilla browsers. Javascript and AJAX are used to optimize client interfaces. XML is used for platform independent screen configuration and layout. PHP modules were designed and coded for re-usability, which achieved quick turnaround for deployment of new reports.
  • Programmed an automated alert system to email DBAs and MIM administrators when application metrics exceed preset thresholds. This system uses the UTL SMTP and DBMS SCHEDULER Oracle packages.
  • Coded a restaurant status board prototype using the Google Maps API. The application is driven by XML that can be refreshed by database lookup at predefined intervals.

  • Programmed a Zeiss CMM CNC Coordinate Measuring Machine . Designed, built and maintained the company's website. Set up and maintained the company's LAN and workstations.

  • Improved and maintained a data warehouse ETL process coded in ksh shell scripts. Migrated 15 Oracle databases from old servers to new servers. In collaboration with other DBAs, upgraded and duplicated databases with RMAN in a uniform manner. Installed and configured a standby database pursuant to the Company's DR plan. Provided ongoing Oracle DBA support to analysts, developers, and users.

  • Worked with Java programmers to create NETCOM, a CRM subsystem. Designed and built the Oracle8i schema using partitioning and CLOBs, and coded packaged stored procedures. The stored procedure API, which is exposed to the Java code, facilitated schema evolution and accelerated development, integration, testing and deployment.
  • Developed ISR, an Oracle9i system, to manage internal service requests. Created the schema and coded the client/server interface using JSPs and Java beans with Tomcat and Ant.
  • Developed PORTS, an Oracle8i system, to track switch port usage. Created the schema and coded an intricate Perl script to perform daily ETL and delta reporting. This automated, server-based, system replaces a labor intensive, desktop-based, legacy system, which reduces overhead and will interoperate with future open systems.
  • Refactored several stored procedures and triggers into one streamlined table trigger in the SLR customer service system. Transaction processing was improved 50-fold. This exercise also served as a best practices case study, which I presented to other developers and management.

  • Designed and developed the online classified ads search engine for The Dallas Morning News website. Created the database schema and implemented text searches using Oracle interMedia and CLOBs. Coded the CGI application with Perl, HTML, and JavaScript. Coded the ETL process to load data from TDMN legacy systems. Developed a log tracking subsystem to aggregate usage stats and email reports to management.
  • Collaborated with Belo Interactive developers to develop an intranet web content publishing tool, VelocIT, used by Belo's 16 websites. VelocIT's single source, multimedia web publishing functionality is implemented using Java stored procedures. Web content is deployed asynchronously with Oracle8i's DBMS JOB package. For VelocIT, Belo Interactive was awarded the Newspaper Association of America's 2001 TechNews Best Practices Award.
  • Spearheaded an in-house task group to determine and apply the required changes to hundreds of form, report, and code modules for Y2K compliance. The project was completed ahead of schedule and without incident. It saved the company over a 100,000, which was the cost of a proposal offered by Oracle Consulting.
  • Administered a data warehouse for Marketing. Its architecture is a classic star schema with denormalized fact tables and multiple dimension tables. Coded ETL scripts to validate and merge legacy data into base tables using Perl, Pro C, Sql Loader, and PL/SQL.
