Topic: PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF DIESEL ENGINE USING ALTERNATE FUEL (JATROPHA OIL)
Summary:
The demand for fossil fuels which are widely used in Internal Combustion Engines is increasing day by day. If they are consumed at the present rate they will get exhausted in the next few decades and hence there is a need for an Alternate Fuel. Alternate Fuels are substances that can be used as fuels, other than conventional ones. These can be used directly in Internal Combustion Engines without any modifications. Some well- known alternate fuels include biodiesel, non-fossil natural gas, vegetable oil etc.
Our contribution:
In our present project alternate fuel was blended with diesel in different proportions. At each blending proportion engine performance parameters like Thermal Efficiency, Brake Specific Fuel Consumption, Volumetric Efficiency, Mechanical Efficiency etc. were estimated. A comparison was made between the performance parameters obtained using pure diesel and when diesel is blended with alternate fuel. Finally, conclusion was given regarding the optimal blend ratio to be used.
My contribution:
Done a literature survey on biodiesel, history of biodiesel, production of biodiesel, preparation steps rules and regulations, International Standards for Biodiesel, benefits including usability, power, performance, economy, emissions, greenhouse gas reduction, toxicity, biodegradability, safety & recycling, effect on human health, and the future of biodiesel. Studied the parts and working of an internal combustion engine in detail. Worked on single cylinder diesel engine and computerized 4 stroke 4 cylinder engine using Processed the data from the various experiments, calculated the various performance parameters and drawn graphs between the various performance parameters.
Mini project:
Topic: A Study report on Gas turbines.
Summary:
The history of gas turbine development has been studied. The theory of operation of a gas turbine has been discussed in detail. The various types of gas turbine have been studied along with their method of operation. Both internal combustion and external combustion have been studied in detail. The concept of gas turbines in surface vehicles has been studied in detail. The marine application of gas turbines has been dealt with. The advances in material technology and the use of software like CFD and finite element analysis in the field of gas turbines has been studied. Both the advantages and disadvantages of gas turbine as a power source have been examined in detail.
My contribution:
Studied the construction and working of a gas turbine. Analyzed the idealized Brayton cycle with all its processes and studied its P-V and T-S diagrams. Studied the complexity of gas turbines and compared it with internal combustion piston engines. Studied the process of electrical power production from Gas turbines. Studied the new and emerging concept of micro turbines. Studied the use of small gas turbines as auxiliary power units of larger machines. Studied the use of gas turbines in ships, locomotives, helicopters and tanks. Studied the use of microelectronics and power switching technology in micro turbines.
- Special project:
Topic: Study of the mechanism of oscillatory solid phase combustion.
Summary:
Oscillatory solid-phase pyrotechnic combustion in the following system NH4ClO4+ Mg (powder)+ K2Cr2O7is studied, where NH4ClO4, Mg and K2Cr2O7are the oxidant, reducing agent and frequency-modulating species, respectively, in order to elucidate a more detailed description of the oscillatory mechanism. The simplicity of this pyrotechnic system serves our purposes very well.
My contribution:
Shown that the combustion of the above system is highly oscillatory in nature. Once ignited, the mixture exhibits ‘pulsed burning’, the intensity of the combustion varying periodically between flash combustion (deflagration) and smokeless smouldering. A number of experiments were carried out which confirmed that the phenomenon is intrinsic and that the controlling process is chemical in nature. Used software to process the experimental data and draw the graphs between the various combustion parameters.
