Software Engineering Manager

Headed the Software Department, plus electronics and systems. Worked on QA high-end inspection machines for automotive, military, and medical applications, using multiple lasers and advanced mathematics, multiple machine vision systems, and electromagnetic induction sensing.

Shortly after being recruited from Wilcox I discovered that this smallish company was running gravely in the red.

Drafted as the primary planner for a best-efforts attempted production problem turnaround. This necessitated a company-wide turnaround in entrenched ways, which was not supported by management. In my judgment, this company was therefore no longer savable, and I left.

Senior Applied Specialist

Consultant in the development of embedded software for microprocessors and microcontrollers. EDS develops and supports PC, UNIX, embedded and mainframe software systems. Developed software for mobile computers for manufacturers\' materials tracking. Identified tremendous but ill-exploited market opportunity for EDS (Palm software). Obtained consensus with EDS director of wireless offerings as to respective group responsibilities. Appointed myself Palm OS champion and trainer, developed training program, lobbied for recruits. Resulting contingent of Palm people is to be supplied to EDS Business Development people. Mentoring responsibilities for new recruits and junior people so as to increase their deploy-ability and ROI. Was asked for ideas for effective show demos. Conceived EDS-created Miniature Automatic Guided Vehicle (MAGV) as crowd-drawer. Won high management approval. Designed the vehicle, lead the project using 10 people. Was offered mostly people sitting on the bench and second hand equipment. Because of my career record, was given wide latitude to run as I saw necessary to get done pronto. Also wrote the main software. Project went from initial idea to working unit in 8 weeks. Prepared presentation and gave talk to higher management and EDS marketing consultants. Device consistently draws crowds, as intended. Invited to follow this success with further projects of my conception. Three more simultaneous projects about to begin under my technical lead; also won the services of a dedicated project manager.

Was trained in CMM Level 3, System Life Cycle, and Project Management processes and mathematical modeling software.

Owner

Projects included writing manufacturing inspection software and law office automation software. Performed all project management and design personally. Recruited for customer.

Example project: Was invited to tour and make suggestions to an advanced tool and die shop. After networking their PCs and CNC machines, I dramatically increased speed of a critical CNC machine. Then wrote software that brought the measurement data from their CMM machine back into their CAD/CAM system, thereby closing the manufacturing loop and allowing better Q.A. and quality documentation for their customers.

Technologies used: C, Visual C++, Watcom C/C++, Visual Basic, c-tree ISAM, Windows 95, Microsoft networking, Internet, assembly language.

Independent Research

This period was dedicated to research (at my own expense) in topics including natural and artificial intelligence, neural networks, and adaptive systems. Also contributed on UNIX to a start-up company based in Ann Arbor.

Technologies used: C and C++, CSS neural network software, artificial intelligence methods, graphical programming.

Owner and Manager 8

Managed the construction of a complete C compiler for the Motorola 68000 microprocessor, and of the automatic compiler generation system that was used to develop it. One result was one of the few practical running systems for automatically producing both the parsing and object code-generating halves of a compiler.

Personally designed and constructed a new minicomputer central processor from concept through instruction set design, micro-architecture design, logic design, microcoding, debug, and programming. The entire machine fit on a 12 inch by 7 inch circuit card, and could run high-level language programs faster than a VAX 780. The machine was covered in depth in the cover story of Mini Micro Systems magazine.

Wrote the business plan, arranged a private placement for funding from a stockbroker, a lawyer, and others.

During same period co-founded ARK Research in San Diego, CA, a semi-spin-off of QMS, to make and sell printer hardware. Won over investment banker. Participated in the business plan writing and fundraising, was subject to due diligence. $1.5 million was raised while giving up only 15% of the company using complex R & D partnership with tax benefits to investors. This required my personal credibility since I was the sole technical partner (VP R & D) of the company. Turned over operation of the company to the other two partners and the investment banker and focused on Advanced Computing Technologies.

Technologies used: Pascal, microcode, OS/2, logic analyzer, assembly language.

Systems Engineer 3

Devised software to refine plotter-quality fonts into laser-quality fonts, thereby producing instant typefaces for free. Wrote diagnostic software and circuit design software. Designed 2 seventy-chip circuit cards in 2 weeks.

Created, with three peers, the first moderate cost, intelligent laser printer controller, and QMS\'s first laser printer product. Because microprocessors were then too slow, this required special accelerating hardware which I designed. The first character was printed less than 24 hours after the hardware and software components were first integrated, due to nearly bug-free work. A prototype was demonstrated in only 13 weeks after the decision to enter the market. (QMS became a world leader in laser printers, traded on NYSE, and was bought by Konica Minolta). My work can be seen here

Was instrumental in correcting design flaws in many communications products based on IBM Bisync, System\\34, 327x, and NCR Common Trunk.
