PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Linux System Administrator

Responsibilities:

  • Heartbeat: This service runs across the Data Centers sharing IP resources, These resources must be aligned in the same DC for the correct functionality of the VOD system, if one of this is not in place it may cause disruption on the VOD service content, by flipping back the resources will bring back the service online.
  • Apache or Httpd; We are using this service to cache chunks of the content streamed by Wowza so the client will be able to reproduce correctly the content if has stoped the reproduction will start showing the spinning circle, most of the cases with a simple power cycle of the service will fix the problem, in other cases, the cache gets corrupted so we may need to re-create the cache folder.
  • Tomcat; The system runs CMS where the Content manager is able to update, add or remove content to be play on the endpoints. This service runs on port 80 if the service has stopped by checking the status of the process on the console ps -aux | grep tomcat and killing any zombie process then restarting the service will bring back the service on-line.
  • Unison: The replication of the content is very important across Datacenters, in regards to the HA, in most of the cases this service fails because of the NFS mount, by checking the status $mount, making sure that this is not in read-only ro, By re-staging them to rw (Read and Write) the unison service will be back on track.
  • HaProxy: We use Dynatrace to monitor all the services, so if we found a high load on any server we can check if HaProxy is load-balancing the load correctly on the servers, this service provides a web page with all the stats, on this we can track down any problem showing and when it starts to happen.
  • Deployment of new version and fixes of the application, we ask for a maintenance window to the ship and start deploying the latest version, we upload the new package to the VOD system and unpack then we follow the documentation procedure by the end we need to reboot all the end-points TV’s we use Procentric for LG TV's by running a bash script with the list of IP's that we can do it remotely.
  • Bash scripting; In order to improve the system we need to do some automation scripting, most of the time we use bash, in other we use python.
  • Staging; if a new ship needs the VOD system we need to install the system in a new set of servers, we use Clonezilla for the images with the basic information and then following the documentation we procedure to deploy the characteristics based on the ship.
