Exterior Lighting Product Engineer
Responsibilities:
- Developed DVP&R test plans, tested and reviewed result data for various lamps, including compliance to exterior lighting customer specifications, FMVSS, KMVSS, and CCC regulations.
- Met with customer numerous times to thoroughly explain results; created detailed, time - sensitive, and cost-effective containment plans for testing failures while meeting major program milestones.
- Compiled FMVSS, KMVSS, and CCC certification testing reports for submission to customer and for China certification for legal approval.
- Composed company guideline on how to properly package, label, and ship lamps to Chinese market to expedite testing and reduce amount of time spent in customs.
- Constructed various mockups and implemented 50+ engineering changes to lamp components due to various testing and manufacturing issues, while improving poke-yoke, including material changes, electronics component adjustments, general part manufacturability, and ease of assembly for line operators.
- Resolved various high-profile issues with customer including: implementing correct color-matched materials on visible components, validating electronic testing fixes, design and production validation testing, lamp-to-vehicle sheetmetal fit and finish, appearance-related quality and manufacturing issues.
- Tracked all customer-related issues through clear and concise documentation with detailed work plans to contain issues in a timely fashion.
- Organized and documented all design changes using extensive documentation, including easy-to-understand summaries of engineering changes, drawing and BOM markups, quotes, purchase orders, etc. in combination with customer systems using Alerts, Concerns, and Notices to properly document changes on customer side.
- Set the lighting group standard for quality expected in engineering change summaries and have led multiple training sessions for other engineers to improve documentation skills.
- Assisted in reviewing assembly equipment with integrator and manufacturing facilities for various lamps. Discovered design flaws during lamp production ramp-up process and provided input on how to improve; suggested solutions which lowered cycle time while significantly reducing quantity of defects during assembly process on multiple product lines.
- Supported program at customer assembly plants during launch for extensive periods of time, travelling both internationally and domestically. Communicated issues discovered at customer manufacturing plant directly to lamp manufacturing plant to capture, contain and resolve highlighted issues as quickly as possible.
- Documented lessons learned from all team personnel involved on multiple programs post-launch and assisted in creating and updating multiple internal design guidelines.
- Created multiple Technical Design Reviews highlighting all aspects of lamp design for multiple programs; incorporated an understanding of legal, customer, and internal specifications and regulations in a clear and concise fashion; presented to all members of the FNG lighting group.
- Created multiple Manufacturing Feasibility Reviews for multiple manufacturing plants, assisting plant staff and upper management to gain deeper technical understanding of component design, manufacturing challenges, and assembly processes involved.
- Developed DFMEAs for various types of failure modes for multiple programs; assisted in Control Plan and PFMEA creation as well as internal document alignment to customer requirements.
