DATABASE ADMINISTRATION TEAM LEAD

  • When the Marine Corps transitioned its unclassified network from being controlled by HP back to Marine Corps control, there was no section within the Marine Corps Network Operations and Security Center MCNOSC to take over the administration of the database server infrastructure. I volunteered to be the lead of the team of three personnel and take control of the database infrastructure in addition to my other responsibilities. This infrastructure includes over 130 Microsoft SQL Servers SQL 2005, 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 and Windows Failover Cluster 2003, 2008 R2, 2012 and Unix Oracle Servers 10g and 11g . In this role I was able to build upon my extensive Relational Database Theory background with daily hands-on administration of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and 2012. I am now the Subject Matter Expert for the MCNOSC for all issues related to Microsoft SQL Servers. Daily tasks for this position include: Personnel Administration, Section Documentation, SQL 2012 Migration Project tracking, coordination with other MCNOSC sections, training other team members, administering SQL Failover Clusters, administering SQL Mirrors, troubleshooting database incidents and deploying new SQL clusters. Major accomplishments in this position include:
  • Taking over control for the extensive HP Database infrastructure with no outages.
  • Deployment of the pilot Server 2012 / SQL 2012 Failover clusters for the Marine Corps.

  • I was asked to transfer to the Marine Corps Network Operations and Security Center MCNOSC while deployed to Afghanistan. I was first assigned to the Tier III Integrated Networking Support INS section, where my primary role was to supervise the 11 civilian employees that manage the security boundary of the entire Marine Corps network. This involved Cisco Routers, Fortinet Firewalls, Red Hat DNS servers and IronPort Mail Security Devices. Due to a personnel transfer, I was asked to move to the Enterprise Directory and Messaging EDM section where the mission is to provide Active Directory Forest Services, Domain Services and Email Services for the Marine Corps. I am primarily responsible as a supervisor for the eight sub-sections and 156 personnel assigned to them. In both positions at the MCNOSC I have been responsible to supervise the ITIL processes for the sections. Accomplishments include:
  • Supervising the Operation and Maintenance of the classified and unclassified Marine Corps Enterprise Networks providing critical communication services to every Marine Corps Installation worldwide.

  • I was requested by name to serve as the senior enlisted Microsoft Server and Cisco Network administrator for the 13 month deployment to Afghanistan. I acted as the senior technician in the command and directly supervised the command's two contracted engineers, a Microsoft MCSE and a Cisco CCIE. My duties included daily administration, health monitoring, planning upgrades, troubleshooting problems, determining root cause and performing problem management to refine administration processes. I was responsible for the Microsoft Server 2003 Active Directory Forest, Microsoft Exchange 2003 Organization, Cisco EIGRP Local Area Network, Cisco BGP Wide Area Network and Fortinet Firewall devices. The scope of the network included over 36,000 Users, 15,700 Computers and 425 Servers across 50 geologically separated posts. Accomplishments include:
  • Gradually over the 13 months transformed an incident-prone, unstable network into a reliable communication platform, providing mission critical services to thousands of users in the Area of Operation.
  • Designed and implemented a network routing architecture that had never been used on a Marine Corps network that once implemented never lost connectivity and provided double the available bandwidth.
  • Designed and Implemented a Quality of Service model for the routing network that ensured communication was possible over slow satellite links.
  • Assisted in the Redesign of the routing protocol architecture to prevent network outages from unstable links.
  • Redesigned the Active Directory Sites configuration to allow efficient replication over slow satellite links.
