Senior Database Administrator
- On a 3 year contract assignment as a senior database administrator, was responsible for database administration and application development on what was, at the time, the world's largest operational open systems database totaling over 600 Gb in size. The production and development databases ran on Sun SPARC servers and supported over 1500 developers and end users.
- Designed, coded, and implemented numerous distributed database applications written in C and Oracle PRO C and running on SOLARIS. These were used in the transformation of flat file data from an IBM mainframe database to distributed Oracle databases using Oracle's two-phase commit mechanism. Over 100 Gb of data was transformed daily to the Oracle production databases through daily delta updates.
- Due to a system limitation on the maximum number of disk drives which could be connected to a Sun SPARC server at that time, the company was in danger of running out of disk space on the production server. Lack of availability of this system would have cost the company over 1 million a day. Designed, coded, and implemented a PRO C application which split the data from one Oracle database on one Sun server to two databases on two servers. This application moved over 500 Gb of data and completed just days before the single server was estimated to run out of space. This was all done with complete transparency to the users with zero downtime.
- Developed a three-tier workload testing application in PRO C using Transarc's Encina TP monitor software. This was used to test the viability of using a TP monitor to manage transactions which included commits to both the Sun/Oracle instance and an IBM DB2 mainframe database.
- Developed an application to test the viability of using IBM's MQSeries message queuing software for achieving transactions between the IBM DB2 mainframe database and the Sun/Oracle instances.
- Provided technical assistance to application developers through code reviews which enforced rigid standards for writing, tuning, and optimizing SQL and PL/SQL programs. Also assisted in developing stored procedures, triggers, forms and reports.
