Provide Network Design and Project Implementation

  • Technology Associates is a Managed Services Provider supporting the complete IT lifecycle of Small to medium business in the Raleigh-Durham Area. Since I have been employed with Technology Associates I have been promoted three times and served as a primary member of the Management Team for 3 and a half years. In addition to performing client facing job functions, all listed below, I took a hands on approach for the growth of Technology Associates as a company by performing technical management functions, cross training employees and implementing multiple processes and standards which are still in place today.
  • Some key accomplishments directly related to supporting Technology Associates as a company
  • Backup Systems Migration The company was using a non-cloud, local backup solution which required the weekly switching of USB attached hard drives by the non-technical customer on site. I researched and proposed a cloud based solution to management which was approved. The solution I proposed reduced the overhead cost of managed backup about 38 saving the company about 1000 per month. This solution converted a legacy system with the possibility of data loss to a cloud based solution which supported disaster recovery via the process of converting the backup to a virtualized machine in the cloud. I solely completed the migration of each server and workstation from the legacy to the new system in less than 30 days including the seeding and uploading of about 10TB's of data. The project was a large success.
  • Dozens of Management Tools over the course of my employment I created dozens of tools, executable and web-based using PowerShell, vbscript and c to reduce the overhead and simplify routine tasks that were being performed by the technical team. One of the most effective tools was a tool written for supporting Connectwise PSA. I wrote an advanced web-based tool that was based a singular feature in Connectwise called a configuration. A configuration is a module in Connectwise which stores a default set of info based on a technical object such as a firewall or switch. Using Connectwise to enter this info and search this information was very tedious. It took approximately 10 minutes to open Connectwise and add a firewall to a specific client in a specific site. All the data had to be manually entered and there was no validation making sure the data that was entered was correctly entered. The tool I wrote not only allowed someone to create a configuration in about 30 seconds, via a web interface, but it also was written with the appropriate validation process and logic that allowed additional configuration to be added under a parent child relationship. This tool reduced the overhead for entering client related technical information from 4 hours to about 20 minutes.
  • Visio Diagram Tool I wrote a Visio diagram tool that went into Connectwise and pulled out the configuration information previously stored using the web-based tool I wrote above and automatically created a complete, standardized and formatted Visio diagram. The appropriate information for a firewall was automatically attached to a firewall shape and so forth for all technical objects like, Wireless AP's and managed switches. This allow a Visio diagram to be created in less than a minute that was fully populated with all the clients' technical information.

Consistently obtain high performance through leadership and cohesive team building. Demonstrate success by providing direction in transforming systems to better control risk and reduce cost.

Selected Contributions

  • Designed a custom SharePoint solution that tied into Active Directory which allowed team members to perform One-Click actions on a server directly from SharePoint such as, initiating a remote desktop session or placing a server into maintenance on our server monitoring solution PA Server Monitor. I developed this solution to allow these actions on SharePoint to also be activated via the Blackberry browser remotely allowing an admin to have nearly full admin capability from their Blackberry phone.
  • Migrated a legacy NetBackup Datacenter 4.5 environment to NetBackup Enterprise 6.5.4. Created a simplified matrix that allowed the backup window to be decreased by 47 which reduced the backup window about 10 hours on daily backups and 15 hours on weekly backups.
  • Planned and managed the move of a legacy 1300sf Data Center to a new 2000 SF Data Center. This includes coordinating the transfer of telecommunications, server/networking equipment, and cabling. Planned, designed, and implemented construction of a new 2000 SF Data Center, where I am currently located. Oversaw the work of multiple vendors including cabling, HVAC and electrical vendors.CRL Server consolidation. Final Datacenter specs include two 20 ton Liebert CRAC units in an N 1 configuration, one 100 KVA Leibert UPS, two rows of HP next generation racks consisting of HP a mixture of HP DL385 servers, HP DL 585 servers, Riverbed Steelhead and Cisco 65xx core switches, Cisco 48xx switches and various other hardware devices.

These standards have been adopted for use in Kendle's other 5 other Tier I Data Centers globally. One year later I performed the same actions for an HP EVA 8400 SAN.
  • Coordinated the upgrade of a legacy Citrix Metaframe XP farm to Citrix Presentation Server 4.5. This included the 100 conversion of 34 application manual installs to standard MSI package. This provided a significant time savings and global standardization when management wanted the Citrix environment to support a global disaster recovery model.
  • Designed, developed and published multiple tools that allowed network admins globally to perform multiple tasks more efficiently and in a standardized manner. An example of one of these tools is a new hire tool that allowed an admin to enter about 5 pieces of information and then the tool would auto create the user account in a specific OU based on the users location with auto inclusion of group memberships based on the users function. The tool would also auto create the user's computer account for a desktop and/or a laptop with auto inclusion of group memberships based on the computer's type/function so that SMS would auto deploy application packages to each machine. This tool would also auto create the user's home folder on a specific file server based on a user's location and auto add customized ACL's as defined by Kendle's security team. This tool performed many other functions including proving a finalized output that could be transferred to the Helpdesk Ticketing system that needed to be completed for the new hire process. This tool helped standardize the way new hires were completed by Kendle's helpdesk globally in 24 countries and took what was normally a 30-45 minute manual process down to a 3-5 minute process.
