Senior Systems Specialist

  • On several occasions I was assigned by management issues or projectswhich were ongoing that no one else was able to resolve. This wasbecause I approached all issues with an open mind and took nothing for granted. The smallest of details can be critical in solving any problem. I was also assigned such tasks because I think outside of the box to provide solutions where conventional solutions did not work. All projects or issues that were assigned were resolved.
  • Planned and implemented the upgrade of an existing VertiasNetbackup 5.1 environment to Symantec Netbackup 6.5 followed byan upgrade to Netbackup 7.0.
  • Planned and implemented a redesign of server backup policies to correct and eliminate numerous problems with system backups.
  • Researched additional backup applications to provide granular backups and restores of Microsoft SharePoint, Exchange and SQL environments while at the same time lowering the TCO Total Cost of Ownership of the backup environment.
  • Designed and implemented new backup-to-disk and disk-to-tape environments to further insure data integrity and improve system backup and restore times.
  • Restructured the Authority's old VMwareESX 2.5 / ESX 3.0 environment which included seven ESX servers and eighty virtual machines non-centrally managed, to a centrally managed Virtual Center vCenter 4.0 environment with scheduled reporting, alert monitoring and patch management.
  • Upgraded all VMware ESX 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 servers to vSphere 4.0 Update 1 without disrupting access to production VMs.
  • On multiple occasions had to manually rebuild mission critical VMs from scratch by rebuilding the virtual machine's VMX files while maintaining the VM's VMDK file. All rebuilds of VMs were successful and resulted in zero data lossand minimal downtime.
  • Restructured and upgraded a complex parent / child Windows 2000 domain to Windows 2008. This included the consolidation of Group Polices and cleaning up DNS problem to correctly use dynamic DNS to correct previous issues.
  • Used the Delegation of Control feature in Active Directory to off-load low level network account management like password resets and updating user account contact information to help desk staff.
  • Deployed a series of custom group policy ADM files to centrally manage the Authority's specific settings in applications such as Adobe Reader, WinZip and Java. Previously the Authority managed these settings on a per-user / workstation basis.
  • Upgraded an older Windows 2003 SMS 2003 SP2 server to a new HP Proliant DL385 G5p to Windows 2008 64bit SCCM 2007 server.
  • Implemented a Windows 2008 IIS7.0 server to host and deploy a Proxy.PAC file to centralize the Authorities administration of Internet Explorer Proxy exclusions. This replaced their old proxy exclusion structure which was managed using multiple group policies and was administratively cumbersome to manage. The new Proxy.Pac file allowed the Authority to route web traffic through different proxy servers depending on the websites name or IP address.
  • Created and deployed a Windows 2008 virtual machine running HP's System Insight Manager 5.3 to manage / monitor the Authorities 25 HP servers.
  • Built SharePoint 2007 SP2 and SharePoint 2010 farms for use by the Web and Application Development departments.
  • Upgraded the Authority'saging mission-critical IBM RS6000 server from AIX 5.1 to AIX 5.3 on newer hardware. The AIX server hosted the Authority's custom financial bond management application.

  • Migrated Authority data storage system from an aging EMC Clarion SAN to a Compellent SAN, saving the Authority over 65,000.
  • Recovered all data from a 6TB HP DL320 post system board, RAID controller and simultaneous hard drive failures. This required patience and solid understandingof how RAID worked. Doing so saved the Dormitory Authority from losing months of data and money. The Dormitory Authority realized this and I received acknowledgement from the acting President and Chief Executive Officer Paul T. Williams for my effort put forth to correct this issue.

  • Setup a Sharepoint 2010 farm in a Network Load Balanced configuration that usedKerbose authentication.
  • Used a combination of Microsoft Network Monitor and Wireshark to diagnose dropped connection issues from Windows XP clients to DASNY's Windows 2003 files server and Exchange 2010 CAS array. Packet traces revealed the Windows XP clients were using Kerbose via UDP and not TCP as used in Windows Vista and newer clients. Once the Windows XP clients were updated to use Kerbose via TCP, the dropped connection issues went away.
  • Researched and located a company which sold refurbished IBM Rs6000 9131series servers. Doing so saved DASNY thousands of dollars as compared to buying new servers. The refurbished R6000's were later installed and configured with AIX6.1, then setup to host the Authority's custombond management application.
  • Recovered a file server at remote site that crashedmyself alone using HP iLOto mount an ISO image in order to do a clean Windows 2008 R2 install, followed by restoring all data to the server from backup. All items were done over the weekend and resulted in zero downtime for users at the start of the next business day. There was zero data loss and users did not realize there was any type of server issues over the previous weekend.
  • Took on the role of Database Administrator when the Authorities sole DBA retired. This entailed managing the Authorities 20 SQL 2005 2008 R2 servers on top of my existing job responsibilities.
