VMware Infrastructure (Desktop and Mobility, Datacenter Virtualization)
Responsibilities:
- I designed, installed, managed and administered VMware VSphere infrastructure for Confidential . This infrastructure consists of approximately 100 virtual servers and about 90 virtual and static desktops. The data center had been setup prior to my arrival, but I have been an active force in improving it and making necessary modifications to suit our business needs. My daily tasks were to
- Apply security and software patches to our virtual servers using VMware VSphere, WSUS, Kaseya and Symantec Endpoint Protection.
- I built a lot of Windows and Linux (from ovf templates) application servers. I build and configure each server, install the applications and test before cutovers. Examples are
- Domain Controllers
- EMC Application Extender for enterprise document management
- WinMagic Securedoc for endpoint encryption
- Symantec Endpoint Protection
- Accellion Kiteworks for Secure File Transfer
- Wiki Knowledgebase for easy access to SOPs and materials I developed
- BCL servers for email to pdf conversion
- Smart Deploy Servers
- Multipurpose servers which handled JBOSS, Tomcat and multiple scripting tasks
- Manage backup policies for servers using Symantec Net Backup, VMware Site Recovery Manager and EMC Recoverpoint.
- Troubleshoot failed backups and quickly remediate on a daily basis.
- Troubleshoot issues with servers, do the Root Cause Analysis and develop documentation for remediation and future referral.
- Migrated many applications from old Windows 2003 servers to 2008 R2 or 2012 servers I built. I plan the migration, execute and test and revert to my roll back plan if there are any issues. Also consolidated multiple application servers as single multipurpose servers for efficiency, cost and manageability.
- Citrix Infrastructure (XenDesktop and XenApp)
- I designed, installed, managed and administered various Citrix Systems using Citrix Studio and VMWare VSphere for Confidential . The Citrix infrastructure consisted of multiple vcentre, xendesk provisioning and a single sql server for license management. Some of my project tasks were
- Building non persistent Citrix pool images with the latest VDA. Also built the virtual desktops to connect to this image
- Building static desktops and provisioning them in Citrix Studio for remote clients in the US and India.
- Building physical workstations and provisioning them in Citrix Studio for remote usage. I had to do this when we were running low on NAS space for my data stores and needed a cheaper interim solution to a high demand for network resources remotely.
- Managed and controlled Citrix user sessions in Citrix Studio during peak hours like snow days.
- Managed user licenses in Citrix
- Disaster Recovery Planning and Execution (Site to Site Datacenter management)
- I conducted disaster recovery tasks annually for Confidential at a remote site. Most of the Datacenter equipment had been installed before I started working there. However I used my knowledge to improve the process and cut down the time for disaster simulation tests. Some of my annual tasks were
- Building a domain controller from scratch
- Configure our disaster recovery Linux backup server to mimic the production site
- Setting up a virtual checkpoint firewall (work with our Security director in configuring the VPN to allow site to site traffic from both our VNX systems.)
- Use VMware site recovery manager to bring up most of the essential application servers we need in a disaster
- Build any other necessary servers using VMware Vsphere and use Netbackup to restore to the latest full backup on record. Example was Exchange. I convinced the company to go with Office 365. This will remove this process during the next test.
- Use EMC Recoverpoint to access and prep various LUNs and map them to servers in VSphere
- Build our Redhat Oracle server from scratch. Install the oracle database and mount the backed up data.
- Prep physical test workstations with the right image.
- Build Citrix pool and static desktops
- Have users come in and work at remote site mimicking a disaster scenario. All my tests have been successful to date.
