More on Skills

  • Note: All of these skills are directly related to Linux. I have some experience maintaining Windows machines, but nothing I would feel comfortable being the sole admin involved. I'm always willing to learn though
  • Bash/Ksh scripting: Scripting on Linux is usually done in bash, but the scripts that already existed on the old AIX production server were written in ksh, so I have experience writing scripts in both bash and ksh, and can read both. The production environment at JDR was run on shell scripts, so writing and maintaining shell scripts was a large part of my duties. At Angie's List, the continuous-integration environment is different, but all the moving parts of Jenkins are made of bash scripts, so finding new and efficient ways to move builds around and create solutions to problems is the focus of that position.
  • MySQL Server: Like many web-oriented businesses, Angie's List relies heavily on data stored in MySQL databases. Maintaining and interacting with those databases was part of my duties. In my personal life, I run a variety of servers. Some applications require a MySQL database to function properly, so installing and configuring MySQL servers is a task I am familiar with.
  • Apache/PHP: As part of the LAMP stack, I have extensive experience in configuring Apache and PHP. Again, in my personal life, Apache was the first server I successfully set up and have continued to use and run Apache on my own machines, but also not ignoring other technologies like Nginx.
  • Hardware/Software Maintenance: I build all my own computers, so I'm proficient with internal hardware. All that hardware runs software though, so software maintenance, patches, and upgrades have to be applied, so I'm familiar with those.
  • VMWare: Like many businesses, JDR was in the process of converting some servers to vm segments. I was responsible for converting all of our Linux servers to virtual machines while maintaining the user experience.
  • Linux details: In my position at JDR we transitioned from AIX to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. My contribution to this project was to do the conversion. This involved porting our entire script library, users, groups, databases, whitelists, and dependencies from AIX to RHEL 6.5 while keeping the transition as transparent as possible to the users. I also have experience with CentOS 5-7, Debian, Fedora 20, and Arch Linux. Most of my work-related activities were fairly common, but I can expand if asked. Angie's List uses Ubuntu exclusively, so I've also worked with Ubuntu 12-14 in a professional environment. In my personal life, I am currently running three Linux virtual servers, have Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop, and I am using Fedora 20 on my desktop.
