Detailed Business Objects Task List
This is a list of many of the tasks I was responsible for at the Sun-Sentinel as they related to Business Objects. I also had a list of other duties but I spent 60-70% of my time directly related to Business Objects or Data Warehouse development and managing the ETL.
- Took part in the evaluation of all the leading Reporting Development tools. The group ended up to choosing Business Objects as the software solution.
- I was part of the project team that wrote specifications for Oracle and Business Objects licensing requirements. I also was an integral part of Business Objects hardware specifications team.
- Chose the Business Objects Solution provider who came in and did the initial installation of the software and configuration of the servers. Went through training at the same time. At that time we installed version 6.0 in 1st quarter of 2002.
- I was a member of the conversion team that who were responsible for the extraction and conversion of old data from our IBM mainframe to the new Oracle database. I wrote many conversion programs that handled the data conversion automatically.
- Was a member of the Business Audit team that met with a different Business Objects Solution provider who was contracted to build a Datamart, ETL process, 5 universes and about 25 Go-Live reports.
- Shadowed that provider’s team for many months while they build their solution and provided answers to their specific questions when they arose. I also went through many months of training in Business Objects and took their courses in Administration, Universe Design, Report Development from beginners through advanced report writing as well as other courses.
- Took over primary support of the Business Objects, ETL process and the Data Warehouse after we went live with the new system.
- After between 1-2 years I had to rewrite the entire ETL process (approximately 25-30 of the 42 functions) because the process went from 2-3 hours at Go-Live to 10-12 hours within a year or two. This was not an option because of many production reports that were critical to getting the newspaper out the door were dependant on the ETL process completing within a certain time period.
- Added at least another 12-14 universes and 250+ reports.
- Maintained the Business Objects servers and applied patches and updates as needed.
- Trained other users on how to write and develop reports as well as 3 other report developers within my team.
- Maintained the user environment and security in 6.x and XI.
- Built a development server in version XI and after extensive testing, migrated the Business Objects 6.x servers to version XI R1.
- I assisted other Tribune Corp. properties in building Business Objects environments as they went onto this new “Discus” software to manage their circulation system. I used to travel to their locations for 2-3 weeks.
- Continued as the sole support for this environment for 5 years until 2007 when Tribune Corp. the Sun-Sentinel’s parent company decided to migrate the entire environment (software application, live data, Datamart and Business Objects) into a single environment based out of Chicago.
- They hired an off shore company based in India to head up the Datamart and Business Objects migration and I was chosen to be the Tribune’s technical lead for the project. That entailed speaking on the phone with the offshore project manager for an average of 2-3 hours per day for as many as 6 months. I provided them all the universes and PL/SQL code I had written over the years and then they used that information to convert my process to an Informatica ETL process.
- Designed and build a security model in BO XI that involved 16 separate properties and approximately 1600 users. This included a general corporate area where the base 100 +/- reports were located. Any one of the 11 properties could open and use these reports. I also designed a separate environment for each property where they could use the environment for their site specific reports. No other property had access to these areas.
