Experience

Jan., 2012 - June, 2012 - Software Developer and Sr. Advisor, Confidential
Analyzed and planned the re-engineering of a MS Access application into a browser-based three tier client-server enterprise application, capable of handling multiple projects and users and having additional functionality. The initial implementation was to be a .Net based system but after identifying several major drawbacks, such as data access and security, I proposed integrating the functionality into an existing application and leveraging existing framework, which consisted of Java, Tomcat, JSPs, STRUTS and Oracle.

Design goals were:

  • Drill down approach to allow the material manager to identify and investigate critical material issues by clicking on critical elements.
  • Link to other databases and web services to facilitate determining material status or find substitute material.
  • Utilize enterprise Oracle database servers with real time data in lieu of daily imports of data. Normalize data and add indices to maximize performance.
  • Enhance reporting features including corporate wide reports instead of project by project reports.
  • Eliminate maintenance issues with customized application versions.

Jan., 2010 - Jan., 2012 - Consultant/Developer - Confidential
July, 1978 - July 2007
Founded a software development and consulting company in order to develop new commercial software packages, extend functionality of existing client systems and provide application and system problem resolution for multiple organizations. Functions included:

  • Designing and implementing major systems for multiple platforms.
  • Mentoring project staff, including client employees.

Diagnosing and resolving systems, communications and performance problems for various clients.

Aug., 2008 - Dec.2009 - Solutions Consultant - Confidential
Solutions consultant in the professional services group for the Shadow product, a z/OS middleware product designed to enable Service Oriented Architecture to the Open Systems environment by transforming existing business logic into web services and providing ODBC and JDBC access to z/OS data sources. The systems included mainframe environments of z/OS, CICS, IMS, IDMS, VSAM and open system environments of .Net and Java.

  • Developed proof of concept applications on the customer's site using the customer's actual systems. This was a crucial step leading to the sale of the product.
  • Assisted clients with installation of the product, including required z/OS modifications for security, work load manager and interfaces to existing products. Acted as liaison with technical support to expedite problem resolution.
  • Mentored and trained customer's technical staff while they implemented the first applications utilizing the product. This helped the client get maximum benefit from their investment.
  • Provided clients pre-sales demos, both in person and via the internet to further the sales process.
  • Worked on special projects to adapt the product to special customer needs or provide competitive analysis of other products.

Oct. 2010 - Present - Project for Confidential
Enabling access to business data housed in an IBM IMS database via web services using TIBCO Object Service Broker and Business Works. Tasks include :

  • Analyzing business logic (COBOL and special table translations) and implementing similar functionality via OSB transactions and rules using both a TSO based utility and an Eclipse based GUI.
  • Structuring access to IMS data stores.
  • Developing metadata for transformation into XML documents.
  • Developing tools to assist in transforming IMS MFS based transactions into OTMA based transactions.
  • Assisting client programmers in developing consuming applications utilizing .Net ASPX and Desktop platforms.
  • Trouble shooting various interfaces including IMS OTMA interface and TCP/IP.

June, 2010 - Oct., 2010 - Project for Confidential

  • Migrated client's in-house developed phone management system to a commercial package. Tasks included crafting SQL queries to merge data from MS SQL Server and Oracle via Access queries, creating Excel spread sheets to facilitate manual scrubbing of data and macros to export updated information for import into the new system. System consisted of 3,000+ phones and circuits.
  • Customized an open source learning Website using PHP.

Jan., 1980 - May, 2007 - Major Projects for Confidential

  • Developed an ASP.Net web site to provide user entry, viewing and modification of wire transfer data into a database. An existing Oracle database was used to provide customer data verification.
  • Developed a multi-threaded Windows console application to convert print files downloaded from the mainframe into compressed and encrypted files accessible for ftp downloads to client sites. The application processes either local directories or remote ftp site directories.
  • Managed the migration client's non-standard telecommunications banking application to a CICS based system saving years of investment in their legacy system. System was migrated without major interruptions of service to customers. The resulting system provided greater stability and drastically reduced application development time by modularizing programs and facilitating the use of interactive debugging tools. This reduced time required for changes from weeks to days and eliminated down time to implement subsequent changes.
    • Converted single thread VSAM file access to CICS-based file system.
    • Developed cross-region link to legacy single-thread application modules allowing gradual migration to the new system.
  • Functioned as chief architect for the development of a PC based online teller system. The use of user-modifiable menus, screens, document formats, and transaction descriptions allowed rapid customization for different banks. Reduced effort from days of programming to a few hours of end-user effort by utilizing configuration parameters in a file via interactive utilities, saving maintenance costs and eliminating time to process customer requests.
  • Developed a client/server system consisting of a Mainframe client and a Windows NT service to allow Mainframe jobs to schedule PC tasks after the successful completion of critical processing. Eliminated or reduced customer impact by allowing the Windows tasks to communicate completion results to a Mainframe-based scheduler and allowing operations to take corrective action

Product Development with Confidential

  • Designed and managed the development of a commercially distributed client/server system enabling end users to exchange data between microcomputers and an IBM mainframe without any additional programming effort. This provided easy access to legacy data by desktop applications. Over 300 copies were sold world-wide.
    • CICS & VM servers, PC and Unix clients
    • Multiple interchangeable host file access methods with User, file, record and field level security
    • Field and record level data selection via a real-time compiler/code generator for English-like select/omit statements. Processing included Boolean logic support and views.
