Performance Training and Management System (PTMS)

Amgen Inc. a research based biotechnology company operates in highly competitive market. Amgen identified an opportunity to refine and enhance the sales and behavior skills of its account managers which are considered critical to the strong relationships based on client and best practice research. The company was aware that skills training – without clear expectations and ongoing coaching linked to real business opportunities – had low effectiveness rate. Cognizant built Performance Training and Management System to provide cohesive, integrated skills development and coaching. The system takes a science-based approach to people development – leveraging consistent, supported by an automated, well orchestrated tracking system. The PTMS includes practical tools for assessments, goal settings, feedback, and developmental activities; and provides user-friendly interface that allows sales managers and trainers to complete critical tasks efficiently and capture timely data for decision making. Since the project’s implementation in Jan 2007, the number of managers delivering coaching to their team members on regular basis has increased by 36 percent.
The system has extended the grid environment to mobile and embedded devices, allowing mobile workers to access enterprise data even in the absence of a network connection. Wireless connections are not always possible because mobile sales force may be in an environment that does not have wireless coverage. Often it is not practical to use a persistent wireless connection because applications do not have a real time data access requirement to justify the costs of communications. There are situations where a wireless connection is not desirable because the very presence of a wireless connection could compromise an application or a user’s security. The data synchronization, data integrity and security have been incorporated into the Oracle 10g Lite implementation.
This project won the prestigious American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) for excellence in Performance Management.
