Lead SQL Server Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Improved the database availability to 100% from 88%.
  • Improved the performance of batch process by 80% by configuring MDOP, memory and tempdb correctly.
  • Re-configured database backup plans that lead to optimum usages of hardware resource and increased the backup success rate to 100%.
  • Improved performance of several queries. One particular view which took 12+ hours now completes in 90 seconds.
  • Initiated Database partition project to improve database scalability. Once implemented this will improve batch processes by 100%.
  • Initiated Database compression technology that will improve read performance and save 80+% on disk resources.
  • Initiated Server consolidation project to reduce cost.

Environment: SQL SERVER 2008R 2/ 2008/2005/2000 , POWERSHELL, Sybase, I3-Indepth, Quest LiteSpeed, Windows 2008/2003/XP,Linux, VSS, SQL Compare

Vice President (Database Administrator)

Responsibilities:

  • Reclaimed 4 TB (across all environments) of disk space by removing duplicate and obsolete indices from the most critical database of the firm. This index tuning project also improved the INSERT performance by 220%.
  • Implemented database compression technology from SQL Server 2008 to compress very large read only databases. This state of the art technology has helped us to reclaim 87+% of disk space on these databases without any performance degradation
  • Implemented database collection technology from SQL Server 2008 to collect SQL Server performance data from all SQL Server 2008 servers. This state of the art technology will help us to replace vendor performance monitoring tool and that will reduce the operating cost of the IT department by at least $100 thousand per year.
  • Architected, developed and implemented three data archiving processes:
  • First process archives 6.0 to 7.5 million rows weekly across 4 servers simultaneously. This process was originally manual intensive in which replication was dropped and application servers were shutdown before the archive. Post archive the data was backed up and restored from the publisher to the subscriber and finally replication was re-created and application servers were restarted. This entire manual process was 100% automated.
  • Second process archives more than 12 million rows every night without bringing down the application and very minimum performance hit.
  • Third process archives more than 100 thousand rows every night without bringing down the application and very minimum performance hit.
  • Derived and implemented Least-privileged User Account (LUA) security policy on all production SQL Servers. This policy is now helping the firm in obtaining SAS 70 certification.
  • Analyzed SQL Server Resources by extracting data from NETIQ application.
  • Developed and implemented a process (named: Disk Procurement Forecast) to forecast future SQL Server disk space requirements.
  • Developed and implemented a process (named: Process Watchdog) by which DBAs are alerted whenever any SQL Server process runs beyond a set threshold.
  • Developed and implemented a process (named: Smart Retry) by which failed SQL Agent jobs are handled automatically. Whenever a job fails this process emails detailed cause of the failure and restarts the job, if it failed due to Dead lock, timeout, communication failure, etc.
  • Optimized at least 40 stored procedures. These procedures were performing poorly because of frequent or in-frequent recompiles, out of date index statistics, parameter sniffing, DDL and DML inter-leaved, optimizer choosing wrong indices and very complex SQL statement.
  • Developed and implemented a process to track obsolete stored procedures. The process identifies stored procedures that are not being used so that these can be cleaned out from the database.
  • Developed and implemented a process that monitors missing database backups.
  • Developed and implemented a process that monitors missing tape backups (tape backup that backups SQL server database backup files from disk to tape).
  • Developed and implemented a process (named: Access Vault) which captures 360 degree of security (including object level permissions) for all logins - SQL, Windows Active Directory group and Windows logins. Information Security team uses this process for SAS 70 certification.
  • Formulated SQL Server Disaster Recovery plan.
  • Developed 12 SSIS package for development team. Bug fixed SSIS package supplied by SQL Server 2008 performance Data warehouse.
  • Upgraded SQL Server 2000 to 2005 to 2008.
  • Test and apply SQL Server service packs.
  • On day to day all database tasks assigned to me, which includes but not limited to connectivity and performance challenges, SQL Agent job failures, backup failures, adhoc backups, install SQL packages, etc.

Environment: SQL SERVER 2008/2005/2000 , I3-Indepth, NETIQ, Quest LiteSpeed, Windows 2008/2003/XP, IIS, VSS,SVN,C++, Java, SQL Compare
